The spinoff success of “Mork & Mindy” led to numerous hit HBO specials, and finally his breakthrough: 1987’s “Good Morning, Vietnam” [pictured], which earned him an Oscar nomination (he’d ultimately win one for “Good Will Hunting”). Williams’ bankable track record included blockbusters (“Mrs. Doubtfire,” “The Birdcage”) and family films (“Aladdin,” “Jumanji”) but lately all that energy hasn’t been able to find the right outlet. Maybe that's why he is returning to his first medium of entertainemnt, stand up comedy. Come witness and aging but always spry Williams as he bounds across the stage on his Weapons of Self Destruction Tour.
Gary Budzak of The Columbus Dispatch calls on Williams to do something for the country he clearly loves so much. “One way to break America's dependence on foreign oil would be to capture the laughter generated from Robin Williams' stand-up comedy shows,” the newspaper decreed. “The laughs-per-minute from his show last night in the Palace Theatre probably were enough to power Downtown for a week.”
